Counseling Center Referrals

The Counseling Center staff is available to consult with faculty, staff or students about matters regarding the welfare of a student or other concerns requiring brief, solution-focused decisions.

Referring a student to the Counseling Center can demonstrate that you have that person's best interest in mind. If there is a student that you are concerned about and believe that a referral to counseling would be helpful, here are some quick tips:

  • Talk to the student in private.
  • Show genuine concern and interest.
  • Ask questions and listen attentively.
  • Reflect back what the student may have shared with you.
  • Specifically share your reasons for concern without sounding judgmental or critical.
  • Suggest the Counseling Center.

Making the Referral

There are several ways to refer a student to the Counseling Center.

  1. Give the student the Counseling Center phone number, 972-860-4673. The student can call from your office or from home.

  2. Walk the student to the Counseling Center in Bldg. S, Room S136, to help them make an appointment for counseling. If the student is in crisis, please convey this to the front staff. Crisis situations take precedence, and a counselor will immediately meet with the student.

  3. Contact a counselor at the Counseling Center. If you decide it is important to share information about a student with a counselor, it is best to receive permission from the student beforehand. However, if you do not feel comfortable asking the student for this permission, you may still contact a counselor and share information that is in the best interest of the student’s health and well-being.

Students of concern may also be reported to the CARE Team whose mission is to care for students of concern and in distress. Learn how to report a concern.
