Eastfield College has another new brewing certificate on tap, with classes scheduled to start in November. After successfully partnering with several local breweries to begin offering a Journeyman Brewer Certificate this past summer, the college is now adding a
Technical Brewer Certificate geared toward individuals who are already working in the brewery industry and would like to move into a higher position, such as a Master Brewer. No other institution in Texas offers such a certificate.
Master Brewer Peter Boettcher, who teaches classes in both of Eastfield's brewer certificate programs, holds a degree in Brewing Science and is a state certified trainer of brewers from the Doemens World Brewing Academy. He brings more than 30 years of brewing experience into the classroom and said there is a need for more educated and qualified brewers.
"I have been contacted by breweries in Texas and throughout the U.S. looking for referrals of where to find qualified brewers," Boettcher said. "What makes this program so special is that it provides the necessary technological and scientific background for head brewers and brewmasters, and it also provides the practical leadership aspect of brewing management. That is a very unique configuration in brewing education."
The Technical Brewer Certificate program consists of two classes: Applied Brewing Science and Advanced Brewing Practices. To enter the Technical Brewer Certificate program, candidates must have previous educational knowledge in brewing as well as practical working experience in the brewing industry. Technical Brewers are fit for a leadership role within the brewing industry as well as the brewing supply industry.
Technical Brewer classes start Nov. 2, 2015. The next Journeyman Brewer class starts Feb. 8, 2016. Local breweries who are partnering with Eastfield College in the brewer certificate programs include Grapevine Craft Brewery, Rahr & Sons Brewing, Shannon Brewing, Martin House Brewing, Rabbit Hole Brewing, Texas Ale Brewing, Lakewood Brewing, Community Beer Company, Panther Island Brewing and Twin Peaks Brewing Co.
